About the Director - Mr. Joseph Carey

Mr. Joseph Carey is the Band Director at Bohemia Manor Middle School and has been for the past 13 years.  He was also one of the Assistant Directors for the North East High School Blue Crew Marching Band for 7 years before leaving that position to become a judge for the National Judges Association and Tournament of Bands.  Mr. Carey also performs and guest conducts regularly as a member of the Elkton Town Band, the Upper Chesapeake Wind Ensemble, and various pit bands in the area.

Before coming to Cecil County, Mr. Carey lived in Ohio. However, he grew up in western Pennsylvania (many of you are aware of his Steelers allegiance).  While he was in school at Youngstown State University he was a featured soloist on the recording project "Urban Requiem" which won the Downbeat award for best collegiate wind ensemble recording.  The CD is available for purchase here.

Before beginning his teaching career Mr. Carey spent just short of two years touring and performing 400 concerts (that's not a typo) with the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra in every continental state, Canada, and Japan.  Before leaving the band to get married and find a place to live that wasn't....a bus, he performed as part of their newest CD release "Steppin' Out" which is available for purchase at the Glenn Miller website (here).

Mr. Carey holds a Bachelors in Music Education from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio and a Masters in Music Education from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, IL.  He was a Teacher of the Year nominee in 2011.  As of 2014 he had conducted over 130 concerts with the bands of Bo Manor and other groups in the community!

This is a picture of my instruments sitting on stage somewhere in America.  I took this from behind a curtain while sliding my camera out onto the stage floor so no one would see me...I think the guy in the front row caught me though.
